Manchster City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain put on a brave face after learning his club’s last-16 opponents.

“It’s always a pleasure to play against Real Madrid, and also to play in a big stadium like the Santiago Bernabeu,” he said.

“We’re happy to go there, of course, and we know what we are going to face, we know them very well.

“Also, of course, they know us and what we’re doing and our manager and our team. Everybody knows each other, but it’s a real pleasure to go there.”

Tottenham club legend and ambassador Ledley King is confident the club can progress to the Champions League quarter finals.

Jose Mourinho’s side were drawn against Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig in Monday’s last 16 draw.
“They (Leipzig) are a good side, play with a lot of pace and intensity,” King told BT Sport.

“It will be a good game. Going to Germany is tough. It is one we won’t be taking lightly. It will be a tough task, but I am quietly confident we can get through.”

On Spurs boss Mourinho, King added: “The manager has won the Champions League and his experience will rub off on the players.”

Takumi Minamino is heading to Liverpool in the January transfer window – and he will be available to play in the Champions League.

The Japanese international forward was left out of Red Bull Salzburg’s matchday squad on Saturday as he is set to make an £7.25m switch to Anfield.

Minamino has already played for Salzburg in the competition this season but is allowed to play for Liverpool in the knockout stages following a change to the Champions League rules last season.

Here’s the offical UEFA rule which stipulates he is free to play in the UCL:

  • 45.01 As of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February 2019 (24.00CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.
  • 45.02 Any or all of the players from the above quota of three may have been fielded for another club in the qualifying phase, play-offs or group stage of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League.

A reminder, RB Leipzig are top of the Bundesliga and Bayern, who Spurs lost twice to, are fifth. It’s a decent & very exciting draw for Spurs but not accepting the ‘great draw’ headline.

Liverpool have been drawn to play Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16.

The holders, one of eight seeded teams having won their qualifying group, will play the away leg first and have home advantage in the return.

Five-time winners Barcelona take on Napoli, Borussia Dortmund will play Paris St Germain and Italian champions Juventus face Lyon.
